The Little Match Girl – Resource pack for teachers Lesson Five – Art Focus

The Little Match Girl

Note:
This lesson is designed to be delivered using whichever art skills focus you are working on at the time. This ensures it can be delivered at any point within the art and design curriculum. Therefore, prior to the lesson you will need to consider which skill(s) you would like to get students to focus on. This gives an opportunity to focus on using some of the art skills outlined in the curriculum, including painting, sketching or drawing. You may wish to then focus on one technical aspect such as shading, patterns, textures, shapes, form or the use of a tool such as pencil, charcoal or paint.

Lesson Objective:

• To create an illustration of a scene.

Suitable for pupils working at:

Key stage one and two levels

Preparatory tasks prior to delivery:

• Decide on which skill(s) you wish for the class to focus on to create their illustrations
• Prepare the equipment required to create the illustrations using the chosen skill or tool focus
• Check you have access to the supporting PowerPoint

Task One:

As a quick starting task, share slide two of the supporting PowerPoint with the students which provides several story illustrations from a range of children’s books. Ask students to discuss what they like and notice about the illustrations. Get them to consider how they bring the story to life for the readers.

Task Two:

Share slide three of the PowerPoint with the students which provides a bank of images from the show. Ask students how they can identify what is happening in the story through what is seen in the photographs. Ask the students the following questions, ‘What do you know?’ ‘What do you think you know?’ to support their understanding of the photographs. Following this, students could describe what they think is happening, using ‘because’ to justify their opinions.

Task Three:

Pick one of the images from task two which can be used to illustrate your chosen skill. Share your chosen skill with the class such as painting, sketching or drawing. Then, model or describe the process to use this skill to create an illustration for a scene from the show.
