Lesson Objective:

• To understand the history of a match-seller during the Victorian era.

Suitable for pupils working at:

Key stage two level

Preparatory tasks prior to delivery:

• Check you have access to the supporting PowerPoint
• Optional: Print a copy of the history fact-file sheet for the teacher
• Print the supporting worksheet for the students
• Prepare writing and drawing equipment to complete The History of a Match-Seller worksheet and list

Task One:

Show the image of a historical little match girl on slide two of the supporting PowerPoint. When looking at the image, ask students to tell you what they know? This introductory question asks students to reflect on what they may be able to learn about little match girls and boys from looking at the image to introduce them to the task. You may wish to ask students to consider what social class they may be based on what they are wearing and what life may be like working on the streets.

Task Two:

Read the Teacher’s Historic Fact-File on the history of a match-seller to the students, using the PowerPoint to support your delivery.

*Note: The definition of key words and terminology is provided on the supporting PowerPoint. You may wish to pause throughout to describe these or answer questions.

Task Three:

Ask students to make a list of the key facts on the history of match-sellers in chronological order. You may wish to get students to do this individually or in small groups before deliberating or do this task as a whole class.

Task Four:

Using this list get students to complete the supporting The History of a Match-Seller worksheet.
