Lesson Objective:

• To design a Victorian bonnet or hat.

Suitable for pupils working at:

Key stage one and two levels

Preparatory tasks prior to delivery:

• Check you have access to the supporting PowerPoint
• Prepare a selection of materials for students to use to design their bonnet or hat such as: fabric swatches, sticks, lace, wool, string, paint, pencils, glue, sponges/ printing equipment, beads, buttons, cotton wool, card decals and clay.

Task One:

Display the images on slide two of the PowerPoint of Victorian bonnets and hats. As a class, discuss what design features you can see.

Task Two:

Ask students to use the resource template provided to design a Victorian style bonnet or cap. Encourage them to think about the costumes from the show to inspire them, the historical materials used including lace, cotton and wool. See how they can interpret this in their own design. You may wish to allow them to use clay or papier-mâché instead to construct a hat or bonnet. This is at the discretion of the teacher and where they currently sit in the curriculum.
