In this workshop, participants will explore ways creating movement based on literary source material. Jessica will be sharing her methods of generating movement based on literature. Jessica’s approach to movement creation is based on the disabled and neurodivergent sensory experience; however everyone can use these methods as a choreographic tool.

During the first section of the workshop, participants will be able to use their own choice of literary material, or to choose from a selection provided, to which they will be guided in creating a movement response. We will hold some time and space for participants to create their own choreographic material which they will be able to take away from the workshop and develop further should they choose.

During the second half of the workshop, Jessica will be sharing her current choreographic project, a piece exploring the nature of women’s friendships through the lens of the poems of Katherine Philips, and inviting participants to take part in this exploration. This section of the workshop will cover ways of bringing together additional interdisciplinary influences.

Participants from all movement backgrounds are encouraged to take part, no formal dance training is required. This is a disabled-led workshop, and disabled artists are particularly welcomed – please get in touch to discuss your access needs.

This will be a hybrid session, taking place in person and online. If you would prefer to attend this workshop in-person, please click here for further information and to book.

Jessica Carter is an independent dance artist specialising in disabled-led and inclusive dance, and research-based dance practice. Jessica trained in classical ballet at the London Russian Ballet School, before going on to study Dance at the University of Roehampton.

Alongside her professional dance career, Jessica has been researching ways of practicing dance and creating movement which centre and celebrate the disabled experience. Jessica is now applying these findings to choreographic projects, looking to bring together dance and academic research in interdisciplinary ways.
